Diaper Liners – An Essential Item for Cloth Diapering

In my initial research into cloth diapering I read much about the use of diaper liners and became convinced that they would be a good investment. These thin disposable liners, placed on top of an unfolded diaper promised to save me precious time on cleaning messy poop from my baby’s diapers and, of course, what busy Mama doesn’t want a few minutes extra time on her hands? I began using them with high expectations but I soon found out that my baby, being exclusively breastfed, created a type of runny poop that almost always bypassed the liner and ran over on to the cloth. At the end of the day I still found myself scrubbing out the stains by hand before putting them in the pail which seemed to defeat the point. Thus the liners became a rather unnecessary luxury and I stopped buying them.

However almost as soon as my baby took her first bite of solid foods everything changed. Now the poop was firmer, a diaper liner would have been perfect way to dispose of the mess easily and quickly. Unfortunately for me I had completely run out of liners and they were not available locally in Dominica. In the meantime I began using pieces of kitchen paper instead but this was a dismal replacement as it usually disintegrated and made a huge mess. The proper diaper liners were what I needed and I could not wait until my online order came through to meet me.

The liners I chose were the Imse Vimse range because it said they were biodegradeable and suitable for septic tanks. They come in two different sizes – one small and the other toddler sized. Neither one fits a prefold or pocket diaper perfectly but can be easily folded to match the size. They really do keep most of the mess away from the diaper and make for easy flushing of poop! Now I stock up my supply from Cloth Diaper Outlet as I’d never want to be without them again.

Another great thing about these liners is that they can be reused! Whilst the dirty get flushed immediately, the ones that are just wet can be washed and reused. To me and all other eco-mamas on a budget this is a fantastic advantage. Even easier is the fact that they can go in a pail and be washed in the machine along with the regular diaper load so it’s completely hassle free.  Using diaper liners saves both time and money.

In addition to all these advantages the recycling of the liners also gave me the opportunity to compile some statistics on my daughters diaper habits. After they were clean and dry I kept all the reused ones in a bag and when I finished the roll of 100 liners I counted how many had been saved in order to tally her poop to pee ratio! I think only another cloth diapering Mama would understand this type of fun fact finding :-) Happy diapering days to all!!
